Design

The Samsung M55 boasts a sleek and elegant design that is sure to catch the eye, thanks to its radiant colors and light-reflecting properties. Unlike the recent A series phones, which feature glass bodies, the Galaxy M55 opts for an all-plastic design. This choice offers advantages such as a lightweight feel and ease of use, allowing for comfortable one-handed operation without strain.

The rear panel of the M55 showcases a frosted glass pattern with a matte texture, even though it’s made of plastic body, thus effectively resisting stains and repelling sweaty fingerprint marks.

Despite its 6.7-inch screen, the M55 remains compact and comfortable to hold, with curved sides and a slightly curved back that ensures a comfortable grip. Impressively, the phone weighs just 180 grams and measures 163.9 x 76.5 x 7.8 mm in dimension, making it remarkably light and slim considering its substantial 5000mAh battery capacity.

Similar to the flagship Galaxy S24 series, the phone features three individual camera rings aligned vertically in the top left corner of the rear panel, contributing to its unique aesthetic appeal. The LED flashlight accompanies this camera on the side.

Practicality is also a focus in the design. For functionality, it has a hybrid SIM tray on the left side. It holds one nano-size main SIM card and a microSD card for more storage space. Although, the microSD slot can also serve as a second SIM.

Meanwhile, the right side houses the volume buttons and the power button, while the bottom has a USB Type-C port along with a speaker and a microphone. And at the top, you get to see a microphone.

This phone comes in two impressive colour: Black and Orange thus, leaving the option to the user to choose.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy M55 boasts a display that prioritizes entertainment value. It features a 6.67 inches FHD+ display with a 1080 x 2400 pixels screen that offers a generous canvas for your favorite movies, games, and web browsing. with a screen-to-body ratio of approximately 86.4%.

It also sports an aspect ratio of 20:9, alongside the 1080p resolution thus resulting in a pixel density of about 393 pixels per inch (ppi). While not boasting the absolute highest resolution, the display delivers sharp visuals suitable for most users.

However, the true strength lies in the Super AMOLED Plus technology. This translates to vibrant colors, deep blacks, and a wide color gamut, ensuring an immersive viewing experience.

The display’s 120Hz refresh rate further enhances this by enabling smooth scrolling and fluid animations, particularly noticeable when gaming or navigating menus. Even under harsh sunlight, the display remains bright enough for comfortable viewing.

An interesting addition is the in-display fingerprint sensor, a first for the Galaxy M series. This provides a convenient unlocking method, but its responsiveness might not be quite as snappy as some rear-mounted fingerprint sensors.

Additionally, this display is capable of reaching 1000 nits brightness with High Brightness Mode (HBM). It has is 16 million colors, providing a wide gamut for accurate colour reproduction.

While the display supports HDR (high dynamic range), it lacks Dolby Vision support. Despite this, HDR content still appears stunning, with enhanced contrast and vivid colors adding depth to multimedia content. Furthermore, it supports an Always-on display feature, allowing certain information to be displayed on the screen even when the device is in standby mode.

Camera

Similar to the Samsung Galaxy C55, the M55 sports three vertically aligned camera rings on the back, featuring a 50-megapixel main sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a 2-megapixel macro camera.

While it captures vivid colors, detail is often lacking, especially in low-light situations. This softness extends to the 8MP ultra-wide sensor, which delivers decent colors and white balance for social media sharing, but sacrifices sharpness for color vibrancy. The 2MP macro camera is purely for close-up shots and isn’t meant for everyday use.

The primary sensor features f/1.8 aperture, a wide lens, 1/1.56″ pixel size, 1.0µm individual pixel, PDAF, and OIS thus capturing vivid colors. Although, it often sacrifices detail, particularly noticeable in low-light conditions.

This trade-off in detail extends to the supplementary cameras as well. The 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera delivers images with moderate colors and acceptable white balance, albeit at the expense of clarity to preserve vibrant colors during processing.

It comes with an f/2.2 aperture and a 120˚ field of view, allowing you to tell the whole story in a single frame. This lens is ideal for capturing expansive landscapes or group shots, adding versatility to your photography.

Additionally, there is the 2 MP macro lens with an f/2.4 aperture that enables close-up shots, emphasizing intricate details. This lens is ideal for adding depth to portrait shots.

On the front, the camera boasts a high 50-megapixel resolution, but unfortunately, more megapixels don’t always translate to better results. It produces low-quality images and wrestles with maintaining accurate color balance, especially in challenging lighting scenarios.

Meanwhile, on the video front, both front and rear cameras can record up to 4K UHD resolution recording at 30 fps, with the option for smoother 60 fps recording at 1080p. It also has a dedicated “Super Steady” mode that helps stabilize videos, but it’s limited to 1080p resolution at 30 fps and unavailable for the selfie camera.

Hardware and Software

The Galaxy M55 truly shines in terms of performance, leveraging the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset paired with a robust 12GB of RAM with an octa-core processor clocked between 1.8GHz to 2.4GHz. It has one 2.4 GHz Cortex-A710 core, three 2.36 GHz Cortex-A710 cores, and four 1.8 GHz Cortex-A510 cores. This powerful combination ensures seamless multitasking and handles resource-intensive tasks with ease.

Memory options include 128GB of internal storage with 8GB of RAM, or 256GB of internal storage with either 8GB or 12GB of RAM. Furthermore, the storage expansion is supported via microSDXC cards, utilizing the shared SIM slot.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy M55 comes pre-installed with the latest Android 14, offering a refined and user-friendly experience. Moreover, it boasts several notable features such as Knox security, the Galaxy Health app, and Smart Switch. Running on OneUI 6.1 atop Android 14 out of the box, the software experience mirrors that of Samsung’s flagship S24 lineup, albeit without advanced AI capabilities. Pre-loaded with a suite of apps from both Google and Samsung, users enjoy a comprehensive software ecosystem.

Graphics performance is further enhanced with the Adreno 644 GPU, promising up to 20% faster rendering compared to the 778G chipset. Storage expansion is a breeze with support for microSD cards up to 1TB. Additionally, the phone has a 45W wired charging ensuring quick replenishment of the sizable 5,000mAh battery.

This smartphone supports 5G, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6 to boost connectivity. It also supports  Bluetooth 5.2 version, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, and USB Type-C 2.0 port for charging and connection. On the upside, Near Field Communication (NFC) capability enables convenient cashless transactions via the Samsung Pay app.
